Stepping from Storm to Stillness

The scriptures this Sunday invite us to step away from the chaotic noise of life and enter a space of quiet trust.

In the first reading (1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a), Elijah stands on a mountain enduring a crushing wind, an earthquake, and a fire, expecting God to manifest in the spectacle. But the Lord is not in these dramatic forces; instead, God is present in a tiny, whispering sound. This passage suggests that encountering the divine requires cultivating an inner stillness, stepping to the entrance of our own chaotic moments to listen for the gentle murmur of grace that the distractions of life so easily drown out.

This need for steady focus reappears vividly in the Gospel (Mt 14:22-33), where the disciples are caught in a terrifying storm at sea. When Jesus walks across the water and calls Peter to join Him, Peter bravely steps out of the boat. However, the moment Peter shifts his gaze from Christ to the howling wind and waves, fear takes over and he begins to sink. It is a deeply human struggle, illustrating how quickly we lose our footing when we focus on our problems rather than on God. Yet, Jesus' immediate response is to stretch out His hand and catch Peter, offering unwavering safety amid the storm.

As Saint Paul expresses in the second reading (Rom 9:1-5), this shelter-from-the-storm experience can also come with its own unique sorrows. Finding peace in Christ can cause us to ache deeply for the people we love who do not believe in God or who choose not to practice their faith. Paul loves his people so intensely that he would willingly face spiritual hardship himself if it meant they could experience the fullness of Christ's promise. His grief reminds us that a life anchored in God naturally expands our hearts to carry the burdens of those who are still lost at sea.

Ultimately, these readings show that God meets us not in the loud disruptions of the world, but in quiet whispers and desperate moments of surrender. When we cry out for help, His hand is always stretched out to save us. Together, these texts challenge us to lower the volume of the world around us, keep our eyes fixed firmly on Christ, and trust that His peace is stronger than any storm we face.
