Making Room

In this Sunday’s the first reading (2 Kgs 4:8-11, 14-16a), the woman of Shunem recognizes that Elisha is a holy man of God. She opens her home and her heart to him, expecting nothing in return. Her hospitality becomes a blessing, and God rewards her faith with the gift of a son.
In the Gospel (Mt 10:37-42), Jesus challenges his apostles to make room - to place him above every other relationship and attachment. Their discipleship must transcend even the relationships which form so much of who they are. Just as the prophet Elisha was welcomed in the first reading, and the reward was a new life of a child, in the Gospel the reward for receiving a prophet will be to “receive a prophet’s reward,” eternal life with the Father.
Saint Paul (Rm 6:3-4, 8-11) reminds us of what happened at our baptism, where we were united with Christ in his death and resurrection. The old life is left behind, and a new life begins. As Christians, we are called each day to live as people who belong to God, allowing his grace to shape our thoughts, choices, and actions.
All three readings invite us to welcome God's presence and put our trust in him. Like the woman of Shunem, may we make room for the Lord. Like Paul, may we live as people transformed by grace. And like the apostles, may we choose to follow Christ wholeheartedly, trusting that when we place our lives in his hands, we discover the life we were truly made for.
Faith Sharing Questions
1.What does it look like in practical terms for you to "make room" for God in a busy and often distracting world? Which relationship, activity, or concern most competes for your attention and commitment to God?
2.The woman of Shunem offered hospitality without expecting anything in return. When have you experienced the joy of giving generously, expecting nothing in return?
3. If you could ask God to help you make room for one thing in your life right now, what would it be and why?
