Sheepfold
In the first two readings for this Sunday, we are reminded that after the crucifixion and resurrection the disciples and others, who were not as yet disciples, were like scattered sheep. In the first reading (Acts 2:14a, 36-41) Peter speaks boldly to the crowd about how the one they crucified was both Lord and Christ. Peter’s words cut them to the heart, and they ask the question that echoes in every generation: “What are we to do?” Peter answers with clarity and purpose. Repent and be baptized. Turn back to God. Scripture recounts that about three thousand people responded that day and were added to the community of believers.
In the second reading (1Pt 2:20b-25) we are reminded to live out our Christian faith by following the example of Christ. Peter writes, “For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.” Once lost, we are now gathered. Once wandering, we are now led by the One who knows each of us by name.
In the Gospel (Jn10:1-10) Jesus deepens this image by describing himself as both the shepherd and the gate of the sheepfold. The sheep recognize the voice of the true shepherd and follow him because they trust him. A stranger’s voice causes them to run away. In the same way, Christ calls each of us personally. His voice is steady and faithful. Those who listen to him are led to safety and to pasture.
Jesus is the portal, the place of passage from which to steer our lives. The world often offers many voices competing for our attention, yet only the voice of the Good Shepherd leads to fullness of life..
Faith Sharing Questions:
Jesus makes an extraordinary promise. “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.” What helps you recognize Jesus as the gate rather than the many other voices competing for your attention.
After hearing this parable, how does it change the way you look at the other “sheep” God has placed in your life?
The shepherd calls each sheep by name. How have you experienced God calling you in a personal way during your faith journey?
