The Bend in the Road

Most of us know the comfort of a familiar path.
We make plans.
We measure progress.
We assume tomorrow will resemble today.
Then something shifts.
A phone call in the night.
A diagnosis we didn’t expect.
A relationship comes undone.
A dream dims and flickers out.
Sometimes it happens all at once.
Sometimes through a slow, painful unraveling.
Either way, the road bends without warning.
At the bend, the ground is rocky and uneven.
Though we may have walked this direction for years,
the path is unrecognizable now.
We long to plan ahead.
To know what is coming next.
How long this thing will last.
What this will require of us.
But a bend never offers any kind of certainty.
Instead, it asks something deeper.
To slow our steps.
To walk with care.
To recalibrate.
This is a moment when faith
is both tested and revealed.
At the bend in the road,
we come face to face
with what we truly believe,
and a choice is set before us.
Will we dare to open our hearts
in the living Presence of God among us,
or will fear harden into resolve.
Will resentment disguise itself as strength,
and leave us walking the road alone?
For those who hold fast
to God’s Presence in these times
faith is stripped of excess.
It grows leaner.
Stronger.
With nothing left to lean on,
faith learns to rest in trust alone.
God meets us here.
When fear settles over us like a fog.
When hands reach out in love and support.
In moments when courage rises up.
In wordless prayers and steady breaths.
These moments can slip by unnoticed.
Yet they matter more than we know.
It is in these moments that we recognize
that God remains when the path grows dark.
And although the bend is rough and demanding,
it is now illuminated enough to take a few trembling steps.
So we walk the bend as it comes.
Still not knowing what lies ahead.
But steadied,
by the presence of Divine Mystery
in each unfolding step.
