Holding Each Other Up

This Sunday’s readings invite us into a deeper understanding of the communal aspect of faith.  From Moses on the hillside, whose uplifted arms become a symbol of communal support, to Paul’s exhortations to Timothy to remain steadfast in proclaiming the Word, and finally to Jesus’ parable urging persistent prayer.

In the first reading, (Ex 17:8-13) we see how faith and community go hand-in-hand.  Moses’ hands grow weary, and it is the support of Aaron and Hur that sustains him, ensuring that the battle is won.  This reminds us that faith is not just a solo journey; it is often a communal effort where we hold each other up.

Paul’s words to Timothy (2 Tm 3:14-4:2) echo this call.  He encourages a steadfast commitment to the teachings of Scripture, which equips us for “every good work.” We are to proclaim the Word with encouragement, continuous learning and teaching, and to reprimand one another, even when it is inconvenient.

Finally, Jesus’ parable (Lk 18:1-8) of the persistent widow teaches us about the power of perseverance in prayer.  Just as the widow’s persistence leads to justice, our continued faithfulness in prayer and action opens the door to God’s justice, and grace in our lives.

1.When have you needed the support of others to sustain your faith during challenging times?

2.In what ways can you help hold up someone else’s “weary arms” in your community of faith?

3.Where might you need to show a bit more persistence or patience in your faith journey right now?
