Everyday Honesty

In today’s readings, we see a unifying thread of integrity, faithfulness, and wise stewardship of our resources. The first reading (Am 8:4-7) presents us with merchants eager to end religious observances so they can return to dishonest practices –falsifying measures and shortchanging the poor.  The prophet’s message is clear: our everyday honesty is a matter of justice and a non-negotiable part of a faithful life.

Paul’s instructions to Timothy (1Tim 2:1-8) root our actions in prayer, portraying prayer as the foundation of a peaceful and dignified life that keeps us focused on God.

Finally, the Gospel parable (Lk 16:1-13) challenges us to see that being trustworthy in small matters is a gauge of how we will handle more challenging matters.  Although the parable may seem to praise a dishonest steward, Jesus is not endorsing dishonestly.  Rather, he urges us to be as prudent and resourceful in spiritual matters as the worldly can be in theirs.

In essence, today’s readings call us to align our daily lives with the deeper values of our faith: to act justly, pray earnestly, and remain faithful in all things. It's about being consistent in our values and doing what is right, even when it is difficult or no one is watching.
